PanOptix vs. Vivity: Choosing Your Lens for RLE in Tampa
Short answer: PanOptix gives you the fullest range of glasses-free vision — including small print — at the cost of more halos around lights at night; Vivity gives smoother, more natural vision with minimal night-time side effects, but many patients keep readers for fine print. PanOptix: the full-range trifocal
PanOptix splits incoming light into three focal points — distance, arm's-length (about 60 cm), and reading (about 40 cm). The trade-off is physics: splitting light creates concentric rings around point sources, so headlights and streetlights can show halos or starbursts, most noticeably in the first months before the brain adapts (and it usually does). It's the popular choice for people whose top priority is never touching readers again and who can accept some night-vision character.
Vivity: the smooth operator
Vivity uses extended-depth-of-focus optics — it stretches a single focal point rather than splitting light — so its night-vision profile is close to a standard lens: crisp distance, strong intermediate (computers, cooking, dashboards), and functional near vision. The honest limitation is up close: many Vivity patients use inexpensive readers for small print or dim-light reading. It's frequently chosen by frequent night drivers, and by patients whose eyes have mild imperfections that make light-splitting lenses riskier.
